Nominations for the 2025 Karl Schwarzschild Prize

Nominations are invited for the 2025 Karl Schwarzschild Prize, awarded by the Walter Greiner Gesellschaft für Physikalische Grundlagenforschung e.V. in Frankfurt, to honour the memory of Karl Schwarzschild, who studied in Frankfurt at the beginning of his career.

The prize is awarded to scientists who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of gravitational (astro)physics, including its experimental aspects, for their life’s work and/or their role model function.
The award, which can be shared between up to two scientists, amounts to 10,000 EUR and is funded by the Carl Wilhelm Fueck Stiftung, Frankfurt, and the Physikalischer Verein, Frankfurt.

Nominations should include:
1. A laudatio summarizing the reasons for the nomination (max. of 2 pages)
2. The CV of the nominee
3. A list of publications from the last 10 years

Nominations should be sent electronically only to Prof. Dr. Juergen Struckmeier, Chair of the Karl-Schwarzschild Award Selection International Committee, at struckmeier[AT]fias.uni-frankfurt.de before 30.11.2025.
Self-nominations will not be considered.

The recipient of the award will be announced in Spring of 2026. The award ceremony takes place at one of the annual academic ceremonies of the Physics Department in Frankfurt.

The award winner is expected to spend at least one week at the Department of Physics conducting research in the department, including two lectures accessible to a general audience (Physikalischer Verein, academic ceremony), an expert lecture within the department, as well as participation in specialist discussion groups.
